East Coast Kite Surfing??

I'm looking into to starting kiteboarding this summer but it seems as if I live on the wrong coast. Whats up with Kite surfing around the Jersey shore? I guess I can just guess on buying the gear and go to the North end (non public end) of the island I grew up on (Brigantine) and teach myself. It just sucks not to know what kind of gear I should pick up. I'm a very experienced snowboarder/wakeboarder so that part I'm not worried about... I just don't want to end up stuck out at sea. How do you know what size kite you need and what kind of harness to use.. does it go by weight or by the average wind speeds for your area. Also what brands are good but yet afordable?
Thanks peoples...

Sorry for not responding to your request sooner Fusionizm. I actually had a chance to ride at Sandy Hook, NJ a couple of seasons ago and it rocked. There's an ocean side and a bay side. Both were windy in early October and both offerred quality riding. A good buddy of mine fm out here in the Bay area kept going south and hit LBI (Long Beach Island) and had nothing but praise for that spot too. I forget the name of the store, but there's a good shop down near LBI. Apparently the folks at this shop are super cool.

Awesome, thanks for the info. LBI is like an hour away from me so that is perfect. I'll look into Sandy Hook NJ. I'll have to track down that shop in LBI so I can check out different brands of gear. I can't wait to start since I already miss snowboarding so bad, and it's only been a week without it so far. I need to ride and get out some agression before my head pops... but thats another issue. Thanks again bud, I'll talk to you soon.

Oh yeah, if anyone is out near Jersey kiteboardin- drop me a line. My friends are wimps and I doubt I will be able to get anyone to try it out.

      Thanx ... and ride on

Found a resource from my buddy Gabe Brown who had written a story on his time down at LBI, and provides some worthwhile info. Check out www.1cps.net/articles.htm, to read more about it.

Thanks P-Air. I checked out the link and it had alot of good info. It linked me to a shop over in LBI that teaches kiteboarding and kitesurfing and rents out equipment. Now that I have the info I need its time to get my ass over there and learn some new tricks and buy some new toys. Finally ... theres something to replace my snowboarding addiction when summer comes.
            Thanx again,

Dude, you don't know the half of it. For 15 yrs I was a snowboard addict too. Even moved up to Tahoe for a full season 5 yrs ago and rode 100 days. That was also the year I took my first kitesurfing lesson. It took about 3 yrs, but in the spring of the 3rd year I had a weekend where I overlapped the two sports (we get to do that here in N.Cal. ;-), and I gotta tell you, that was the beginning of the end for snowboarding. Not to say that I'll ever give it up, but even during the winter I try to work on trips where I can get to kitesurfing spots to get the jones out. Careful what you wish for ;-)

Uh Ohh... It seems like this could be the start of a beautiful addiction. I just hate biting my lip and letteing people teach me new things, I'm used to teaching everyone else. Oh well... time to humble myself and become the student. Thanks again for all your help.

                Later
